Guest Lecture Series at Ohio State’s Stone Lab Kicks Off

9:59 am, Tue June 16, 2015 – The 2015 Stone Lab Guest Lecture Series will run from June 18 through August 6 this year

Gibraltar Island Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab, Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie, will be hosting the 2015 Stone Lab Guest Lecture Series from June 18 through August 6, 2015. The lecture series features speakers from Ohio universities, non-profit organizations, governmental agencies and private consulting firms, all covering topics related to the Lake Erie environment.

Some of this year’s lectures are titled:

  • Merging Environmental Science, Engineering and Leadership
  • The Importance of Conservation: Exciting New Natural History Discoveries
  • An Update of Ohio’s Efforts to Protect Lake Erie

Each main lecture will be preceded by a research brief at 7 p.m., where researchers introduce some of the work being funded by Ohio Sea Grant. This year, topics include renewable energy, Lake Erie Walleye tracking and bird migration, among others.

Members of the public are invited to see the lecture series live at Stone Lab on Gibraltar Island.

A webcast is also accessible online to anyone who can’t travel to Lake Erie.

Information on both viewing options is available at go.osu.edu/stonelablectures.

On July 23, students in Stone Lab’s Research Experience for Undergraduates Scholarship Program will present their research projects. Guests can still travel to Gibraltar Island or watch the presentations online, just as they do for the other lectures. The REU presentations start at 6pm, so please plan accordingly.

Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s Island Campus on Lake Erie and the research, education, and outreach facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. Established in 1895, Stone Laboratory is the oldest freshwater biological field station in the United States and the center of Ohio State University’s teaching and research on Lake Erie. Stone Lab offers 25 college-credit science courses each summer for undergraduate and graduate students, advanced high school students, and educators.
