COSEE Great Lakes named Site of the Month

12:51 pm, Tue June 6, 2006 –

The National Science Foundation’s Division of Ocean Sciences supports a network of coordinated centers that facilitate communications between ocean science researchers and educators, now by means of the internet. The Centers for Ocean Sciences Education (COSEE) Great Lakes web site is the Great Lakes Information Networ’s most recent pick as site of the month.

"Increasing public awareness and understanding of the sciences of the Great Lakes and oceans is key to our mission," said Rosanne Fortner, director of COSEE Great Lakes. "The web site is an excellent resource for educators and scientists to find opportunities for collaboration that could foster science literacy."

Through the COSEE Great Lakes site, educators and scientists can access curriculum, events, programs, and materials, which focus on the relationship between the Great Lakes and the oceans, as well as methods of bringing Great Lake education into the classroom. All of these curriculum materials are aligned with national standards and benchmarks.

Researchers will find opportunities to engage in educational outreach activities through COSEE programs designed for enriching research. The Lake exploration workshops are focused on scientists interacting with teachers for a week through questioning and discussions.

Minnesota Sea Grant designed the site with key features that include the following:

  1. Clear links to news, events, curriculum and contacts in each Great Lakes state.
  2. Beautiful photography of Great Lakes locations to help frame the content that is organized in a very navigable format.
  3. The Greatest of the Great Lakes curriculum about Life in the Water, Climate and Weather, Hydrology and Remote Sensing, and Coastal Processes, includes links to innovative and engaging aquatic science content.

A joint effort of the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network, COSEE Great Lakes includes programs in Michigan, Illinois-Indiana, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. COSEE Great Lakes is designed to create dynamic linkages between Great Lakes and ocean research and education with the goal of enhancing scientific literacy and environmental stewardship and is supported by the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
