OSU’s Stone Lab Summer Classes Now Accepting Applications

12:00 pm, Wed January 4, 2012 –

Gibraltar Island, OH It may be snowing, but it’s time for high school, undergraduate and graduate students, and educators to register for summer science classes at Stone Laboratory. 25 different courses at Stone Lab, Ohio State University’s Island Campus on Lake Erie, get students out into the field and onto the lake to experience science up-close and personal while earning college credit that is transferable for all colleges and universities.

Advanced high school students have a choice of six introductory science classes and earn two college semester credits in a week; college and graduate students can earn two credits in a week or up to nine credits in five-week upper-level courses. Smaller class sizes and interaction with some of the country’s leading researchers give students the opportunity to learn science first-hand.

In five available weeklong courses, classroom teachers and non-formal educators can earn credit toward their Highly Qualified Teacher certification while networking with fellow education professionals. Hands-on classes have teachers participate in inquiry- and project-based learning, providing new ideas they can put to use in the classroom.

This summer’s courses are listed at stonelab.osu.edu/courses and applications are available at stonelab.osu.edu/applynow. Courses are filled on a first-come, first-served basis so all students and educators are encouraged to submit their application by March 19.

All students and educators are eligible for tuition assistance, which usually ranges from $100 to $2,500 based on need and academic record. Students enrolled in five-week classes can work part-time at the lab to earn room and board; a National Park Service Internship at Perry’s Memorial and a Hospitality Internship on Gibraltar Island are also available. The scholarship application deadline for college students and educators is March 13; high school students should submit their scholarship applications by March 19. More details are available at stonelab.osu.edu/costs/aid.

More information about Stone Lab is available at stonelab.osu.edu.
