March 21 Clean Marina Webinar Discusses Boat Wash Wastewater

12:00 pm, Fri February 24, 2012 –

Columbus, OH Marina operators from around the country can learn about the best management practices for dealing with boat wash wastewater during the Clean Marina Webinar, to be held 2 – 4 p.m. EDT on March 21, 2012. This is the second webinar in a series of online sessions led by Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin Sea Grant programs as part of the Green Marina Education and Outreach project, an effort to build the Clean Marina programs.

"Marinas offer an ideal location for customers to haul out their boats and pressure wash them," explains Sarah Orlando, Ohio Clean Marinas Coordinator. "But this is a major issue for marinas, as the drainage from vessel wash wastewater-if not managed-can discharge into our waters. This webinar aims to better prepare marina operators to handle the challenges of vessel washing by sharing information across states and sectors."

Washing a boat often loosens metals and non-native plants and animals, which then remain in the wash wastewater. Webinar attendees will learn about the potential environmental impacts of vessel wash wastewater, management options, and state requirements across the Great Lakes region. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of the presenters and marina operators from across the Great Lakes via a live chat after the presentation.

Clean Marina programs are part of a national initiative to engage marinas and boatyards in voluntary management practices that improve water quality, reduce environmental risk to people and aquatic life, and protect the water resources that sustain the boating industry.

Attending the webinar is free, but you must pre-register by Tuesday, March 20. To register, visit go.osu.edu/CleanMarinas . Once registered, you will receive a confirmation email with log-in information. Contact Jill Jentes Banicki at jentes.1@osu.edu with any questions.

The Green Marina Education and Outreach project is a strategic collaboration between Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin Sea Grant programs to support Clean Marina education and outreach efforts across the Great Lakes states. This project is supported by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Learn more at miseagrant.umich.edu/greenmarina .
