Climate Change Webinar to Discuss Development and Implications of the Chicago Climate Action Plan

12:00 pm, Thu March 29, 2012 –

The Ohio State University Climate Change Outreach Team will present "Chicago Climate Action Plan: Creating and Implementing a Community Climate Plan" on Thursday, April 12. Tom McKone of Chicago’s Civic Consulting Alliance will discuss the process for creating the Chicago Climate Action Plan, how Chicago was able to move from plans to action, and current accomplishments, along with next steps to take to continue preparing for a changing climate. The plan, developed in 2007, has been recognized as one of the leading plans in the country because of its scientific rigor, community involvement, and actionable targets.

The webinar, which is part of the Global Change, Local Impact webinar series, will be held on April 12 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Attendance is free, but registration is required to receive log-in information. Visit changingclimate.osu.edu to sign up. A Q&A session, moderated by Heather Elmer of Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve in Huron, will follow the presentation.

The program may be eligible for one hour of continuing professional development (CPD) credit for Ohio Professional Engineers. A certificate of completion can be provided to interested attendees.

Since joining Civic Consulting in 2006, Tom McKone has strengthened regional planning, developed programs to create a more sustainable city, improved the operations of Chicago’s transit system, recommended improvements to Chicago’s infrastructure, and supported the implementation of the Chicago Climate Action Plan. Tom helped create the implementation plan for the Chicago Climate Action Plan, facilitated Mayor Emanuel’s environment transition committee, and is currently working with Chicago’s Chief Sustainability Officer to accelerate sustainability and climate action in Chicago.

The OSU Climate Change Outreach Team is a partnership among multiple departments within The Ohio State University, including OSU Extension, Ohio Sea Grant, the Department of Agricultural, Environmental & Development Economics, and the School of Environment & Natural Resources, to help localize the climate change issue by bringing research and resources to Ohioans and Great Lakes residents. More information about the team’s work is available at changingclimate.osu.edu.
