OSU Stone Lab’s Angela Greene Joins 2013 NOAA Teacher At Sea Program

12:00 pm, Mon April 15, 2013 –

Columbus, OH Stone Lab Education Associate Angela Greene has been selected as one of 28 teachers from across the United States who will participate in the 2013 Teacher at Sea Program. Sponsored by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the program allows kindergarten through college-level teachers to sail on a NOAA ship, where they work directly with onboard scientists and crew before taking their experience back to the classroom.

“The teachers who come to Stone Lab are the motivated, active teachers looking for ways to further inspire their students”? says Dr. Jeff Reutter, Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab Director. “Stone Lab really fans that flame and gives them added knowledge, motivation, and a group of peer contacts to rely on.  We also have a few shining stars like Angie, who are clear examples for everyone else, constantly seeking new ways to be better teachers.”?

Greene will sail aboard the Gordon Gunter, a NOAA vessel currently serving the National Marine Fisheries Service. The 12-day mission out of Woods Hole, MA will survey North Atlantic Right Whale populations as part of the recovery plan for this endangered species. Her experience will be shared via blog posts on the Teacher at Sea website, but the biggest benefactors will be her 8th graders at Tecumseh Middle School in New Carlisle, Ohio.

“Being able to do my Teacher at Sea experience while the school year is still in session will enable me to use my required blog to connect my students to the work I will be doing in almost real time”? Greene says. “My students are also going to help me get prepared ahead of time with research about the species with which I will be working, the Northern Right Whale.”?

In addition, Greene will develop a lesson plan based on the research conducted during her cruise, and the examples of applied science she gathers during her trip will help students engage better with classroom materials. She also plans to become familiar with the possible careers on board a NOAA research vessel and what it takes to secure these positions, sharing that information with both her classroom and the students she meets as part of her Stone Lab education and outreach work.

“Personally, I want to solidify the connections between the Ocean Literacy Principles and the Great Lakes Literacy Principles, vividly demonstrating connections between these concepts”? Greene says. “I believe this will enable me to be a better outreach associate for Stone Lab, and will help me write excellent curriculum for Ohio students.”?

Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s Island Campus on Lake Erie and the research, education, and outreach facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. The Ohio State University’s Ohio Sea Grant Program is part of NOAA Sea Grant, a network of 32 Sea Grant programs dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of marine and Great Lakes resources.
