Ohio Sea Grant Hosts An Evening with Stone Lab to Benefit Ohio State’s Island Campus

12:00 pm, Tue January 14, 2014 –

Columbus, OH Ohio Sea Grant and the Friends of Stone Laboratory (FOSL) will be hosting the 16th Annual Winter Program and Silent Auction from 7 to 9:30 p.m. January 21, 2014, at the Longaberger Alumni House (2200 Olentangy River Road) on The Ohio State University’s Columbus campus. Guests can learn about recent Stone Lab updates and bid in the silent auction. College students can meet former Stone Lab students, learn about 2014 summer opportunities, and even win a Stone Lab scholarship.

Two students in Stone Lab’s 2013 Research Experience for Undergraduates Program will talk about their experience and present their research results. Sarah Vanderhorst, Ohio State Class of 2013, studied ways to track walleye movements in Lake Erie using transmitters implanted into the fish. Kelsey Schultz, Ohio State Class of 2014, examined the impact of nitrogen and phosphorus loading on harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie.

Other featured guests this year are Bruce McPheron, PhD, Vice President for Agricultural Administration and Dean of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences at Ohio State, and Janet Weisenberger, PhD, Senior Associate Vice President of Ohio State’s Office of Research.

Guests can also learn more about Stone Lab’s hands-on science classes and activities, which range from field trips to summer classes and summer research experiences. Stone Lab staff, faculty members and former students will be available to answer questions from interested students, parents, and educators.

FOSL will award door prizes, including a scholarship to cover room and meals for one week at Stone Laboratory. These prizes are open to registered college students in any college or university, but students must be present to win.

Items available in the Silent Auction include tickets to cultural activities and sporting events, books, meals at fine-dining establishments, items for the home and family, and much more. Credit cards will again be accepted this year, along with cash and checks, and all proceeds will benefit Stone Lab’s programs and scholarships.

The event is free and open to the public, but RSVPs are requested via stonelab.osu.edu/events/winter-program. Live musical entertainment by Flute Cocktail will be provided throughout the evening.

The Winter Program is sponsored by FOSL and supported in part by the John H. Dunlap, Jr. Fund for Education, Outreach, and Development at Stone Laboratory. FOSL is a non-profit support group that donates time and money to assist with the planning and funding of the Laboratory. Since its creation in 1981, FOSL has raised more than $1 million in endowments; bought equipment like microscopes, computers, row boats, and sampling equipment to update the lab; supported scholarships for over 500 students; and funded research assistants and visiting professors.

Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s Island Campus on Lake Erie and the research, education, and outreach facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. The Ohio State University’s Ohio Sea Grant Program is part of NOAA Sea Grant, a network of 32 Sea Grant programs dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of marine and Great Lakes resources.
