August 19, 2017 – The Courthouse Players, a theatrical group of local lawyers and judges, will perform "The Andersonville Trial."

This event has been canceled.


The play depicts the 1865 trial of Captain Henry Wirz, the only person tried for war crimes after the Civil War. He commanded the Andersonville Prison, where nearly 14,000 Union soldiers died of starvation and disease.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of Stone Laboratory. All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the renovation of Cooke Castle on Gibraltar Island, constructed in 1864 and 1865 by Civil War financier Jay Cooke.

Event Information

Leave from Catawba Island on the Miller Ferry at 5:00 or 5:30 p.m.

The play will last two hours, with one intermission. Tents, chairs, and restrooms will be available on site.

This event is held entirely outdoors and will run rain or shine, so please dress accordingly.

The last ferry back to the mainland leaves the Put-in-Bay dock at 9:00 p.m.


Note: There will be no transportation from the Miller Ferry to the South Bass Island Lighthouse. The lighthouse is located a short walk away from the ferry dock. Miller Ferry does not permit same-day round-trips with cars on Saturdays, so please plan on leaving your car on the mainland.

Guests are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance online, but if the event is not sold out, tickets will be available at the gate.
